M108 - The Surfboard Galaxy

M108 in an barred spiral galaxy also know as NGC 3556 or the Surfboard Galaxy.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781.  M108 has at least 400 billion stars.  It is located in the constellation Ursa Major at 11h 11m 31.0s RA, +55o 40m 27s DEC.  M108 is 28.7 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 10.0. The best time to observe M108 is in the early Spring.
