M107 - Globular Cluster - Class X

M107 is a Class X Globular Cluster also known as NGC 6171.  It is one of the 150 globular clusters that are found around the disk of our Milky Way Galaxy.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain Elert Bode in 1782.  It is 60 light-years in diameter and contains about 100,000 stars.   M107 is located in the constellation Ophiuchus at 16h 32m 31.9s RA, -13o 03m 13.6s DEC.  It is 20,900 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 7.9. The best time to observe M107 is in the Mid-Summer.
