M106 - Spiral Galaxy

M106 in an itermediate spiral galaxy.  It's classification is between a barred and unbarred spiral galaxy. You can also pick out the small galaxy NGC 4248 just below and right of M106.  NGC 4248 is a small spiral galaxy.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781.  M106 has at least 400 billion stars and has a diameter of 135,000 light years.  M106 is located in the constellation Canes Venatici at 12h 18m 57.5s RA, +47o 18m 14s DEC.  It is 23.7 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.4. The best time to observe M104 is in the early Spring.
