M104 - The Sombrero Galaxy

M104 or the Sombrero Galaxy is a peculiar galaxy of which only 5% to 10% of galaxies are categorized this way.  M104 has a distinctive central bulge and dust lane circling the galaxy giving it the appearance of a sombrero hat.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781.  The Sombrero  Galaxy has at least 100 billion stars and has a diameter of 50,000 light years.  M104 is located in the constellation Virgo at 12h 39m 59.4s RA, -11o 37m 23s DEC.  It is 31.1 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.0. The best time to observe M104 is in the late Spring.
