M101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy

M101 or the Pinwheel Galaxy is a face on spiral galaxy.  On August 24, 2011, a supernova was discovered in M101.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781.  The Pinwheel Galaxy has at least 1 trillion stars and is nearly twice the diameter of our Mikly Way Galaxy at 170,000 light years.  M101 is located in the constellation Ursa Major at 14h 03m 12.6s RA, +54o 20m 57s DEC.  It is 20.9 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 7.9. The best time to observe M101 is in the early Spring although it is visible most of the year for the northern lattitudes.
