M99 - Spiral Galaxy

M99 is a grand design spiral galaxy and is know as the Coma Pinwheel Galaxy or St. Katherine's Wheel.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781.  M99 has at least 150 billion stars and is 85,000 light years in diameter.  It is located in the constellation Coma Berenices at 12h 18m 49.6s RA, +14o 24m 59.4 DEC.  It is 45.2 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 9.9. The best time to observe M99 is in the late Spring.
