M97 - The Owl Nebula

M97 the Owl Nebula is a Planetary Nebula.  It was formed by a dying star on it's way to become a white dwarf.  It ejects a shell of ionize gas that give it the spherical shape.  The central white dward star is 14th magnitude.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781.  It is 1.8 light-years in diameter.   M97 is located in the constellation Ursa Major (Big Dipper) at 11h 14m 47.7s RA, +55o 01m 08.5s DEC.  It is 2,030 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 9.9. The best time to observe M57 is in Early Spring.
