M82 - The Cigar Galaxy

M82 is also know at the Cigar Galaxy.  It is a starbust galaxy and is the same group as M81. It is know to have a very high rate of star formation.   It is visible year round in the Northern Lattitudes.  It was discovered by German Astronomer Johann Elert Bode in 1774 along with M81.  It is 40,800 light-years in diameter and contains about 30 billion stars.   M82 is located in the constellation Ursa Major at 09h 55m 52.2s RA, +69o 40m 47s DEC.  It is 12 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.4. The best time to observe M82 is in the early Spring.
