M80 - Globular Cluster - Class II

M80 is a Class II Globular Cluster also known as NGC 6864.  It is one of the most dense globular cluster in the Milky Way.  In 1860, a nova was found in M80 as was visible to small telecopes. It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1781.  It is 95 light-years in diameter and contains about 200,000 stars.   M80 is located in the constellation Scorpius at 16h 17m 02.4s RA, -22o 58m 33.9s DEC.  It is 32,600 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 7.3. The best time to observe M80 is in the Mid-Summer.
