M79 - Globular Cluster - Class V

M79 is a Class V Globular Cluster also known as NGC 1904.  M79 along with M54 are the two globular clusters that are believed not to be native to the Mikly Way, but part of the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy.  This theory is still being debated. It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1780.  It is 118 light-years in diameter and contains about 150,000 stars.   M79 is located in the constellation Lepus at 05h 24m 10.6s RA, -24o 31m 27.3s DEC.  It is 12,900 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.7. The best time to observe M79 is the Winter.

1 Session.  Used Darks and Flats.  I used ALT/AZ mount and shot very short exposures.  It was easier to setup to get this image on a cold February day.
