M72 - Globular Cluster - Class XI

M72 is a Class XI Globular Cluster also known as NGC 6981.  It is a young globular clusters with an age of 9 billion years.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1780.  It is 104 light-years in diameter and contains about 100,000 stars.   M72 is located in the constellation Aquarius at 20h 53m 27.7s RA, -12o 32m 14.3s DEC.  It is 54,600 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 9.3. The best time to observe M72 is the Fall.
