M62 - Globular Cluster - Class IV

M62 is a Class IV Globular Cluster and it is one of the most massive and luminous globular clusters in the Milky Way as well as being almost 12 billion years old.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1771.  It is 98 light-years in diameter and contains about 150,000 stars.   M62 is located in the constellation Ophiuchus at 17h 01m 12.6s RA, -30o 06m 44.5s DEC.  It is 21,500 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 6.5. The best time to observe M62 is mid Summer.
