M60 - Elliptical Galaxy

M60 is a giant Elliptical Galaxy and is a member of the Virgo Cluster, a group of over 1,300 galaxies located in the Virgo constellation.  It is the third brightest elliptical in the cluster.  There is a much smaller spiral galaxy next to M60.  It was discovered by German Astronomer Johann Gottfried Koehler in 1779.   M60 is located in the constellation Virgo at 12h 43m 40s RA, +11o 33m 09.4s DEC.  It is 56.7 Million Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.8. The best time to observe M60 is in the late Spring.
