M57 - The Ring Nebula

M57 the Ring Nebula is a Planetary Nebula.  It was formed by a dying star on it's way to become a white dwarf.  It ejects a shell of ionize gas that give it the distictive ring shape.  The central white dward star is 14.8 magnitude.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1779.  It is 2.6 light-years in diameter.   M57 is located in the constellation Lyra at 18h 53m 35.1s RA, +33o 01m 45.0s DEC.  It is 2,550 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.8. The best time to observe M57 is in Fall.
