M56 - Globular Cluster - Class X

M56 is a Class X Globular Cluster and can be difficult to spot with binoculars because it is rather dim and does not have a bright core.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1779.  It is 84 light-years in diameter and contains about 80,000 stars.   M56 is located in the constellation Lyra at 19h 16m 35.6s RA, +30o 11m 00.5s DEC.  It is 32,900 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.3. The best time to observe M56 is in Fall.
