M55 - Globular Cluster - Class XI

M55 is a Class XI Globular Cluster and is known as the Summer Rose Star.  It is one of most metal-poor globular clusters know.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Nicolas-Lous de Lacaille in 1752.  It is 96 light-years in diameter and contains at least 100,000 stars.   M55 is located in the constellation Sagittarius at 19h 39m 59.7s RA, -30o 57m 53.1s DEC.  It is 17,600 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 6.3. The best time to observe M55 is in late Summer.
