M54 - Globular Cluster - Class III

M54 is a Class III Globular Cluster.  It was the first globular cluster found outside of our galaxy.  M54 belongs to a satellite galaxy of the Milky way called Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1778.  It about 306 light-years in diameter.   M54 is located in the constellation Sagittarius at 18h 55m 03.3s RA, -30o 28m 47.5s DEC.  It is 87,400 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 7.6. The best time to observe M54 is late Summer.
