M53 - Globular Cluster - Class V

M53 is a Class V Globular Cluster and is one of the more outlying globular clusters being about 60k light years from the galactic center as well as the Earth.  It was discovered by German Astronomer Johann Elert Bode in 1775.  It is 220 light-years in diameter and contains at least 500,000 stars.   M53 is located in the constellation Coma Berenices at 13h 12m 55.3s RA, +18o 10m 05.4s DEC. It is 58,000 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 8.3. The best time to observe M53 is in late Spring.
