M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy

M51 is Spiral Galaxy interacting with NGC 5195 a dwarf galaxy.  The Whirlpool Galaxy is easily visible with binoculars or a small telescope.  It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1773.  M51 is located in the constellation Canes Venatici at 13h 29m 52.7s RA, +47o 11m 43s DEC.  It is 31 Million Light Years away and has a visual magnitudes of 8.4. The best time to observe M51 is in early Spring.
