M50 - Open Cluster

M50 is an Open Cluster Class III Globular Cluster.  It is a very simple cluster and is not visible without a samll telescope or binoculars. It was recorded by Italian Astronomer G. D. Cassini before 1711 and independently discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1772.  M50 is about 18 light-years in diameter.   It is located in the constellation Monoceros at 7h 02m 47.5s RA, -08o 20m 16s DEC.  It is 2,870 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 5.9. The best time to observe M50 is late Summer.
