M44 - The Beehive Cluster

M44 the Beehive Cluster is an Open Cluster.  It looks like a small nebulous object to the naked eye.  It was referenced by Hipparchus in 130 BC, Astronomer Ptolemy and was one of the first objects studied by Galileo with his telescope. It was added to the Messier Catalog in 1769.  M44 is located in the constellation Cancer at 08h 40m 24s RA, +19o 59m 00s DEC.  It is 610 Light Years from Earth and has a visual magnitude of 3.7. The best time to observe M44 is early Spring.
