M42 - The Orion Nebula

M42 is a diffuse nebula and also know as The Great Orion Nebula.  It is one of the brightest and well know objects in the Messier catalog.  I can be easily spotted in Orion's Belt and the nebulosity can be seen with binoculars. The nebula is the closest large star forming region to Earth.  The discover of M42 is credited to French Astronomer Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc in 1610.  It is also believed that the Orion Nebula was described by the Manyans in Central America.   M42 is located in the constellation Orion at 05h 35m 17.3s RA, -05o 23m 28s DEC.  It is 1,344 Light Years away and has a visual magnitudes of 4.0. The best time to observe M42 is in the Winter.
