M40 - Winnecke 4 Double

M40 or Winnecke 4 is an optical Double Star. They are just 2 stars of similar brightness that are seperated by less than 1 arc minute. They are not a true binary system that orbit one another, but just an optical double. It was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1764.  M40 is located in the constellation Ursa Major at 12h 22m 12.5s RA, +58o 04m 58.5s DEC.  One star is 1,013 Light Years away while the other is 470 Light Years from Earth, and they have visual magnitudes of 9.6 and 10.1. The best time to observe M40 is early Spring.
