M20 - The Trifid Nebula

M20 is a combination of an Open Cluster, and Emmision Nebula (red area), a Reflection Nebula (blue area) and Dark Nebula (black gaps). It's name means "Three Lobe" as can be seen from the image. The area is active with star formation and in 2005, 30 embryonic stars and 120 newborn stars were discovered in the Nebula.  The Trifid Nebula was discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1764.  M20 is located in the constellation Sagittarius at 18h 02m 23s RA, -23o 01m 48s DEC. It is 5,200 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 6.3. The best time to observe M16 is late Summer.
