M8 - The Lagoon Nebula

M8 - The Lagoon Nebula was discovered by Italian Astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodiema before 1654.  It is a star-forming nebula and is only one of the two that are naked eye objects in the northern latitudes.  It is 110 light-years in diameter and the Open Cluster NGC 6530.   M8 is located in the constellation Sagittarius at 18h 03m 37s RA, -24o 23m 12s DEC and is 90x40 arc degrees. It is 5,200 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 5.0.
