M3 - Globular Cluster - Class VI

M3 - Is a Class II Globular Cluster that was the first object in the Messier Catalog to be discovered by French Astronomer Charles Messier in 1764.  It is one of the best-studied globular clusters because of an unusually large variable star population.  It is 180 light-years in diameter and contains over 500,000 stars.   M3 is located in the constellation Canes Venatici at 13h 42m 11.6s RA, +28o 22m 38.2s DEC and is 18' arc minutes. It is 33,900 Light Years from Earth, and has a visual magnitude of 6.2. The best time to observe M3 is in May.
