Barnard 33 - The Horsehead Nebula & NGC 2024 - The Flame Nebula

Barnard 33 or the Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula (Center of Image).  It is a dark cloud of dust and gas in an area where star formation is taking place.  It was discovered by Scottish astronomer Williamina Flemming in 1888 while reviewing a photographic plate taken at Harvard College Observatory.  Barnard 33 is located in the constellation Orion at 5h 40m 59.0s RA, -02o 27m 30.0s DEC and is 8'x6' arc minutes. It is 1,375 Light Years from Earth and has a visual magnitude of 6.8.
NGC 2024 or the Flame Nebula is a combination of dark gases and dust lines in front of the bright part of the nebula. It is located in Orion at 5h 42m 54s RA, -01o 51m 0.0s DEC and is 30'x30' arc minutes.  It is 1,350 Light Years from Earth and has a visual magniture of 10.
